It has been awhile since I wrote about a movie. In fact, it has been awhile since I watched a movie. But we had our DVR replaced and when the technician was replacing it, he noticed we were only running RCA cables to our plasma and not component or HDMI cables. Now, we get true HD on our plasma and I do not want to leave the couch!
I recorded Sweeney Todd and finally had a chance to watch it. But I can only give it an ‘ok’ rating. And that is mostly for the visuals/look of the film.
I think Depp did an OK job acting/singing, as did most of the cast. But what really hurt the movie for me was the weak backstory. We only get a quick look into what happened to Depp’s character that turned him into Sweeney Todd. Unlike other revenge movies, Braveheart for instance, we get alot more emotionally attached to the character and feel for his loss and cheer his revenge. For Depp, I didn’t feel for him. Therefore the rest of the movie just was ok.
The main thing that I enjoyed was Burton’s look and his visuals, use of color, angles, etc. That alone will probably have me watching it again sometime in the future. Tim has left me with the most hauntingly beautiful frames ever in the last few seconds of this film with Depp on the floor holding a body (won’t tell who it is to not spoil it for anyone), blood running down and the furnace in the background. STUNNING!
